Edita Chvojka

The SEM Girl

I am a statistician & methodologist at the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

In my PhD research, I focus on problems with interpretation of commonly used fit measures in (longitudinal) Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), with special emphasis on application of SEM in research on youth.

I like feminism, cats, fashion, and being rested.

My passions and interests primarily concern:

Structural Equation Modeling

SEM is ubiquitous in social sciences. This popular modelling technique is at the centre of my research interest. I am currently working on a systematic review of model and data characteristics that influence the behaviour of widely used fit indices.

Network Analysis

During my internship in the psychonetrics lab, I researched new ways of estimating network models that may help bridge the gap between networks and SEM. I also taught Intro to Network Analysis at Masaryk University in Brno, Czechia.

Applied Research

I have co-authored many applied papers, for instance, on depression in pregnancy and postpartum, or sexual objectification and its link to problematic use of the internet for sexual purposes.

Consulting

As a member of the Department of Methodology & Statistics, I regularly discuss methodology and analyses with students and fellow PhD candidates. I have also consulted for non-profit and government organisations and supervised several bachelor’s and one master’s thesis.

Teaching

My PhD contract involves a 20% teaching load. I give seminars in statistical courses at UU and participate in the Utrecht Methodology and Statistics Summer School. In the past, I taught psychometrics, methodology, and Good Research Practices at Masaryk University in Brno.

Mental Health Awareness

I am a great advocate for mental health awareness. My motivation for this undertaking stems from my healing journey, which led me to take a one-year career break. I am happy to share my experience with anyone who may find it helpful or interesting. I also advocate for fair working conditions in academia.
